Small Business Saturday is a national annual event that gives focus to the smaller businesses operating in the UK.  Many of these are independent shops and cafes which are competing in local high streets against bigger chain brands.

One of the businesses that Mr Herbert visited was Larkin’s, a traditional general store on Tarrant Street.  Frank Larkin has run his shop for 18 years, opening 7 days a week until late evening, selling essential groceries and provisions to customers.

Frank’s shelves are filled with lots of local produce including milk and cream from nearby Southview Farm in Bury.  The popular store was refitted earlier this year, includes a free cashpoint machine.  For those who are unable to get to the store, Larkin’s offer a delivery service in the town.

The MP asked Frank why Small Business Saturday and shopping locally is important for retailers.  Frank explained that it is simply a case of “use us or lose us”.

Mr Herbert said: “Small Business Saturday reminds everyone of the importance of independent traders and the services to the community which they provide.  It’s so important that we hang onto wonderful independent stores like Larkin’s which give our local high streets such character.”
