MP ‘wears it pink’ to support breast cancer research

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert ‘wore it pink’ in Parliament to support Breast Cancer Now’s campaign next month.

The campaign is encouraging everyone to wear something pink on Friday 19 October to raise awareness and money for life-saving research.

Wear It Pink takes place during Breast Cancer Awareness month and is the charity’s flagship fundraiser with events taking place across the country.  Since its launch in 2002 the charity has raised over £31 million for vital research. 

In Mr Herbert’s Arundel & South Downs constituency, an average of 1,600 women a year develop breast cancer.  Nationally one in eight women will face a diagnosis of the disease, and men can also be affected.  11,500 women will lose their life to cancer this year, but with research and ever better treatments more people are now surviving their diagnosis.

Breast Cancer Now is working towards a vision that by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will survive.  It is currently funding 85 research grants at 31 institutions in the UK and Ireland worth almost £26.5 million.

Nick Herbert said: “I am very happy to support the Wear It Pink campaign to help raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.  Too many women lose their lives to breast cancer, but research is leading to more effective treatments and helping more people to survive the disease.

“As a patron of the Mary How Trust and Cancer United, both based in my constituency, I am honoured to support the work of cancer charities which are helping people from screening through to patient recovery.”
