MP visits WWT Wetland Centre in Arundel

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert joined staff and volunteers of Arundel’s WWT Wetland Centre for a tour of its flood resilience work and a discussion about environmental issues on Friday (6 July).

The local event was arranged by the WWT Centre as part of the national ‘Speak Up Week’ promoted by the Climate Coalition.  Organisations from across the UK met with their MPs to talk about climate change and local issues like flooding and sustainable drainage systems.

Mr Herbert was met by the Centre’s new manager, Tim McGregor, and Reserves Manager Paul Stevens.  They took a short tour to see flood resilience and habitat creation work which was completed at the Centre last year before joining staff for tea and a discussion about climate change policies. 

Tim McGregor said, “It was great to have Nick visit and hear his interest in and continued support of local issues around climate change.  We were happy to share how we (WWT) have reduced our carbon footprint by 20 per cent in 5 years and are eliminating single use plastics by selling canned water and drinks and giving discounts to visitors who use refillable cups in our cafe.”

Mr Herbert said: “I enjoyed visiting the Wetland Centre again and discussing green issues with the staff.  It is great to have such a popular nature reserve in my constituency, and to appreciate how climate change is affecting the local environment.”
