MP calls public meeting to discuss 'six villages' housing proposals
11/09/2012
Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert has called a public meeting later this month to discuss proposals to build thousands of houses in the 'six villages' area of West Sussex.
Residents of Barnham, Eastergate, Fontwell, Walberton and Westergate will have the opportunity to discuss the issue with their local Member of Parliament and be updated on the current state of the plans.
The public meeting will be held on Friday 28 September from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at Fontwell Park Racecourse.
Arun District Council has proposed a new 'strategic' development of 2,000 houses in the Aldingbourne, Eastergate and Barnham area, on top of plans for additional housing in the villages.
The consultation on the Council's draft local plan closed this week with hundreds of residents objecting to the proposals.
Mr Herbert has expressed concern about the increase in the housing allocation above the number originally proposed by Arun District Council. He has argued that while additional housing is needed in Arun, it should be at sustainable levels that will preserve the character of the villages.
The meeting is open to all local residents.
