Midhurst Rother pupil experiences day in the life of local MP
Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert was shadowed by local pupil Hannah Collins from Midhurst Rother College last week.
Hannah applied to experience a day with the MP as part of a scheme to mark International Women's Day (8 March).
The All Party Group for Women in Parliament, led by Mr Herbert's Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mary Macleod MP, encouraged all MPs to invite a young woman from their constituency to shadow them in Parliament for the day to support the theme ‘Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures'.
The idea was to inspire girls who are interested in politics or taking a leading role in the community.
Hannah joined the MP in ministerial meetings and in his parliamentary office. She also had the chance to watch a special debate on women's issues in the House of Commons chamber.
The highlight of the day was tea in Speaker's House where Hannah met the Speaker, The Rt Hon John Bercow MP.
Speaking after spending the day with Mr Herbert, Hannah said: "It was really interesting to see how things work behind the scenes and I really enjoyed my day with Nick."
Nick Herbert commented: "It's always a pleasure to give young people the opportunity to see how Parliament works and I was particularly pleased to support International Women's Day. It was a busy day, but I hope Hannah got a flavour of what it's like to be an MP."
