Nick Herbert backs Greening Campaign in Arundel

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert was at Arundel Castle on Saturday (20 March) to lend his support at the launch of a local campaign to tackle climate change.

Arundel is the latest village in West Sussex to set up its own branch of the Greening Campaign which encourages people to work together as a community to reduce their carbon footprint.

The campaign was officially launched by the Duchess of Norfolk and hundreds of people took part in a day of activities, including a march from the doctors' surgery in Canada Road to the Castle.

In the next few weeks, residents and businesses in Arundel will receive a card setting out 9 challenges agreed at a public meeting last year, namely:

  1. Turn off lights when you leave a room;
  2. Turn off all standbys;
  3. Walk if the journey is less than a mile;
  4. Top up loft insulation to a depth of 270mm;
  5. Draft proof around doors and windows and cover letter boxes and keyholes;
  6. Boil only the amount of water needed;
  7. Turn down the central heating thermostat by 1 degree centigrade;
  8. Reduce toilet flush by using a "hippo" or other means; and
  9. Turn off the taps when brushing teeth.

Organiser Kay Wagland commented: "I just want to say a big 'well done' to everyone on such an excellent Greening Arundel launch.  What a great turnout, a march from the surgery which wowed the town and literally stopped traffic, excellent information stands with lots of fun activities as well as advice and information, a really fabulous schoolchildren's art exhibition, the Alternatives playing on and off for 3 hours in the wind and rain, very helpful castle staff... there really was so much going on and it all worked so well, thanks to so many people's input."

Nick Herbert commented: "I'm delighted that Arundel has launched its own branch of the Greening Campaign.  It's a terrific initiative that makes local people realise that they really can make a difference to the environment.

"It was marvellous to see the enthusiasm of the community for the Campaign and the involvement of local schools in the event.

"I am encouraged that more and more communities are joining the Greening Campaign.  Arundel has followed Henfield, and other villages including Steyning are also planning campaigns.  It shows that, despite scepticism in some quarters, many local people do believe in the importance of joining in to help tackle climate change."
