Nick Herbert visits farmers' market in Slindon
Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert was in Slindon on Thursday morning (27 August) to lend his support to the village farmers’ market.
Mr Herbert was at the market, which is held in the Coronation Hall on the fourth Thursday of each month, to meet local farmers, producers and customers.
A variety of local produce was on sale including meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread, honey, jam, chutneys, quiches, cakes, greetings cards and gifts, plants and flowers.
Mr Herbert also met with organiser and Chairman of Slindon Life Mike Imms to talk about the future of the farmers' market which relies heavily on the continued support of the local community.
Mike Imms commented: "The village farmers' market has a great atmosphere - when you're there you really experience the best of a thriving, sociable village community. And you get to see people - I've chatted today to neighbours I haven't seen for months.
"Of course it's not perfect - in an ideal world there'd be a wider range of goods and keener prices - but in the absence of a village shop and with very little resources we feel we put on a good show that people certainly seem to appreciate. And I'm delighted that our local MP Nick Herbert was able to come along on Thursday and give his enthusiastic seal of approval."
Nick Herbert commented: "I'm a great believer in farmers' markets. They're a fantastic way to support our Sussex farmers and producers, and it's good for the environment to buy locally.
"I enjoyed my visit to the farmers' market in Slindon and I hope that it will keep going. After the loss of the shop, post office and pub in the village, it provides a nice opportunity for local residents to get together, and I really hope that the community will continue to support it."
The next farmers' market will be held at the Coronation Hall on Thursday 24 September from 9.00am to 12.30pm.
