Nick Herbert MP reselected for Arundel & South Downs

Nick Herbert MP, the sitting member of Parliament for the Arundel & South Downs constituency, has been reselected by local Conservatives as their candidate to fight the General Election on Thursday 8 June.

At a meeting of members of the Conservative Party held in Pulborough on Friday (28 April), Nick was given the full support of its members to continue as their Party’s representative for the important seat.

Arundel & South Downs is a large rural constituency in West Sussex, taking in a significant stretch of the South Downs and picturesque rural market towns and villages including Arundel, Petworth, Pulborough, Steyning and Hurstpierpoint.

Nick has represented the constituency since 2005 when he was elected as the local Member of Parliament at the General Election held in May of that year.  He was re-elected in 2010 with an increased majority of 16,691 votes, and again in 2015 with a further increased majority of 26,177.

Since being elected Nick has championed local communities and led a number of high profile campaigns, notably to save services at the County's hospitals, win major investment to upgrade the A27 with the planned Arundel bypass, improve broadband provision, make the case for fair school funding, and fight unsustainable development.

As well as taking these concerns to Westminster, Mr Herbert has also focused on criminal justice issues, including a spell as Minister for Policing & Criminal Justice, and he leads a global campaign to fight tuberculosis.  He was awarded a CBE last year for his political and public service.

Mr Herbert lives in Arundel and is patron of several local charities, including the Sussex Snowdrop Trust.  He will once again be joining the Trust’s annual walk in Arundel Park on Sunday 14 May.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of Arundel & South Downs Conservative Association, Geoff Thorpe, said: “The Association is delighted that Nick is to be our candidate again. Nick has, during the past twelve years, as our own truly 'locally embedded' MP, worked unceasingly and effectively, both locally and nationally, in the interests of all of his constituents. We look forward to him being given the opportunity on the 8th June to; as we know he will, enthusiastically continue the good work!"

Following his successful reselection, Nick Herbert said: “It is a huge honour to be reselected as the Conservative candidate for this fantastic constituency which I love.

“I have done my best to support the community over the past twelve years and to be an effective representative for local people.  At this important election I will once again pledge to work hard for everyone in the constituency, to stand up for local people, and to be a strong voice at Westminster for local concerns”.
