MP hosts charity tea in the House of Commons

A West Chiltington couple were treated to a cream tea at the House of Commons by Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert last week following a successful bid at a charity auction.

Pauline and Ian Page won their bid in a silent auction to raise funds for the Mary How Trust.  Mr Herbert is a Patron of the Pulborough based Trust and donated the prize to help support their work.

The Mary How Trust was established in 1988 following Mary How's death from cancer at just 46 by her husband and her GP in order to make health screening available to as many people as possible, regardless of their ability to pay.

The charity undertakes over a thousand screenings every year and receives no funding from the NHS.

The Trust's clinic and charity shop is based in Pulborough, but you do not have to live in West Sussex to book an appointment - the Trust welcomes everyone.

Pauline Page has worked with the Mary How Trust as a volunteer for the past four years and bid successfully for the tour and tea as a Christmas present for her husband.  She is one of around 100 volunteers who help the Trust by working in the charity shop, on the reception desk or in organising events.

Speaking after the tea Nick Herbert said: "It was a pleasure to meet Pauline and Ian and hear about the work they do for the Mary How Trust.  It was a nice way to thank one of the Trust's volunteers as they all do so much to support it.

"I'm honoured to be Patron of the Trust which does such valuable work without a penny of public money and I'm delighted that my donation has helped, in a small way, to raise funds for the charity."

Pauline Page said "We had a wonderful time in the House of Commons.  The Mary How Trust is such a brilliant charity and I'm really pleased to be able to help them out in whatever way I can.  Ian and I would like to thank Nick for giving us such a great day."
