Nick Herbert visits local Royal Mail delivery office

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert paid a visit to staff at the Royal Mail Delivery Office in Pulborough on Friday morning.

Mr Herbert was shown around the delivery office and introduced to staff by John Charles, the Delivery Office Manager.  He was able to see how the vast quantities of mail are received and sorted over the busy Christmas period.

The delivery office employs 26 staff and covers an area including Pulborough, West Chiltington, Gay Street, Watersfield and Fittleworth.  It deals with around 25,000 items of mail a day.  Last week, the office dealt with between 140,000 and 150,000 items of mail, including letters, Christmas cards and parcels.

John Charles said: "We were really pleased to see Nick on Friday.  The guys were very impressed that he was there to show his appreciation and support at such a busy time of year. He seemed to get a lot from his visit and enjoyed mixing with the staff."

Nick Herbert commented: "I was very pleased to have the opportunity to meet staff at the delivery office and to wish them a Happy Christmas and New Year.

"I really enjoyed the visit and learned a great deal about the work they do.  I didn't appreciate, until now, that the postmen and postwomen spend several hours sorting their ‘own' mail before they go out on their rounds.

"They work incredibly hard and do a fantastic job - one postman I spoke to had started work at 4am to help clear the mountain of post.  They deal with an enormous quantity of mail over the festive period and I am very grateful to them for the work they do on our behalf."

The last recommended posting date for Christmas mail to addresses in the UK is Thursday 20 December (first class).
